New York Sea Grant has a very robust and active boating safety extension education program led by John Cannaday, NYSG Great Lakes Recreation and Tourism Specialist. This program area consists of several initiatives described below.

Beginning January 1, 2025, everyone operating a motorized vessel in NY is required to have a boater education certificate.
